Saudi Arabia’s ambassador in Dhaka has said his government has decided to fund $20 million for the construction of mosques in Bangladesh.

According to the foreign ministry, Abdullah MH Almutairi said an evaluation team from Saudi Arabia will visit Bangladesh shortly to discuss the issue in details with the authorities here.

He met State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam on Tuesday at his office where they exchanged views on bilateral as well as regional and international issues.

While updating the envoy on the latest situation of the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals who entered Bangladesh, the state minister expressed deep gratitude to King Salman bin Abdulaziz  for extending humanitarian support.

Alam also thanked Saudi Arabia for successfully holding the summit-level meeting of the OIC Contact Group on Rohingya Minority in New York.

King Salman has instructed King Salman Centre for Relief and Humanitarian Aid to allocate $15 million as humanitarian aid for the Rohingya people.

Saudi Arabia has already sent 100 tonnes of relief materials for Rohingyas to be distributed through the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The ambassador informed the state minister that a Saudi delegation is currently in Cox’s Bazar and another team is coming by the end of this week to continue relief support.

He said Saudi Arabia will continue to provide support to ensure the return of the forcibly displaced nationals to Myanmar.
